The Art of Photography – Exercise 41 – Evidence of Action

The following is a direct copy and has been Pasted in for future reference from the Art of Photography coursework PDF Doc. (pasted in Maroon)

1 photograph

A) Produce one photograph in which it can be seen that something has happened. As a suggestion, include in the photograph something that has been either broken, or emptied.

When illustration really comes into its own, however, is in dealing with subjects that are not straightforward solid objects or obvious events. Abstract ideas and concepts usually need an imaginative treatment in order to be put across in a single photograph. You can see countless examples of this in advertising – in magazines, newspapers and posters.

B) Before reading further, write down five examples of concepts that are regularly depicted in advertising and publicity, which cannot be shown directly.

One example from the commercial world is insurance. Insurance companies have to face this problem whenever they want to make a simple image to show what they offer. So, what images do they use? Most have to do with protection, which is what insurers offer, and include shields, umbrellas, fortifications (like castles), and cupped hands. Can you think of others?

These are not necessarily photographic images but the problem is the same. All of them are, in fact, visual analogies – symbols for protection. Symbolism is one of the main techniques in illustration; if you choose an appropriate symbol, it can solve the problem of showing an abstract idea at a stroke.

Nikon D4

24/70 – f2.8 lens

Method & Approach

With regards to this exercise I chose to show something that had broken or failed and at the moment with all the work I have compiled my worst fear would be ‘THE DREADED KISS OF DEATH’ blue screen to appear when starting up my computer. With this in mind I created a screen saver and photographed a simulated moment of such, I hope this isn’t a premonition.

Please see picture and caption below.

Note – The picture has been compressed hence there might be a quality reduction when enlarging.

Thoughts and Reflection

With regards to my chosen picture and my comment above ‘I hope this isn’t a premonition.’ I regularly back up all my data, I also have a dual method in place where I save my pictures. I also have my complete library of pictures saved to DVD but having said that, it is still an undesirable thing to have happen and there is always something that is lost and non replaceable.
